i know i said i would write about the men, or lack there of, in my life, but this post is purely for a man i'm in love with. a man i've never actually met, though maybe in my dreams- our next president:
OBAMAAAAAA as we all know, november 4, 2008 marked an historical moment that forever changed history. on election day i was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion for this brink of change. up until then i felt removed from the entire voting process...i voted by absentee ballot roughly two weeks before election day, i work in the news, where politics is just another day and the dichotomy of our nation was discomforting. but election day proved to mean more than i thought was possible. thank you america.
when the alarm went off that morning, i woke up feeling unusually great. result: red, white and blue.... oh, and star earrings - my election day outfit (i dressed this way more so for the fact that im a dork and like to dress up for anything and everything, and have an uncanny ability to color coordinate my life than for the fact that i'm patriotic) but it wasn't until after hours at work that i felt the true impact of what this election would mean should obama become president elect.
i was watching footage from a shoot we did in harlem -- black voters and pride in black america. i was moved as a woman told her story and discussed what this day would mean for her young son-- that anything is truly possible. through this election, no matter your race, strive to make yourself a better person. yes. we. can. and i started to cry. actually, i turned into an emotional wreck and had to be comforted by my closest colleagues. my period also started that day.
anyyywhooo... election day was also my roommate's birthday, so we had a small get together, all young, white democrats: obama is announced the winner. i stand in shock, amazement. i call my mother screaming, "he won!!! obama is our president!!" as tears begin streaming down my face. i continue to text and make phones calls, not really making any sense to anyone. meanwhile, the white people in the room- everyone -begin to look at me with eyes that speak to how powerful this moment really is. "she's crying...i wish i could feel what you're feeling," one of them said. i had no audible response, just more tears. it was a moment i will never forget. as president elect obama gave his speech, a calm came over me: our nation is truly beginning its shift towards equality.
i only hope people use this incredible energy to make positive changes in their own lives.
"If anyone out there still doubts whether America is a place where all things are possible ... who still questions our democracy, tonight is your answer." - Barack Hussein Obama
